The Gorilla Trekking Experience
Uganda presents two distinct gorilla tour experiences, each offering a captivating encounter with these majestic creatures. The first and more popular option is the regular guided gorilla trekking excursion, granting visitors the opportunity to spend an hour in the presence of a fully human-habituated gorilla troop. The second option is the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors can spend a minimum of four hours with a semi-habituated (wild) gorilla group, accompanied by researchers and rangers. Both experiences require booking a permit, which includes tracking and guide services and must be purchased with cash.
There is an undeniable allure to the great apes of tropical Africa. Their sheer size alone is enough to leave even the weariest observer in awe. The encounter with mountain gorillas is an enchanting and profound experience. It allows visitors to witness the remarkable combination of strength and gentleness, the depth of their social bonds, their harmonious coexistence with the environment, and their constant struggle for survival.
Perhaps our fascination with gorillas stems from our desire to recognize elements of ourselves in them. We share up to 99% of our genetic makeup with these incredible creatures. Sadly, for many years, most encounters took place behind the thick panes of a zoo enclosure or as caricatures in cheesy horror movies. However, today, an increasing number of people are embarking on journeys to the mountains of Uganda to witness gorillas in their natural habitat.
Gorilla tours in Uganda commence in the early hours of the misty morning, beginning at any of UWA’s five visitor centers or park management quarters. Visitors are required to arrive at the briefing point by 7:30 am, indicating that they would have spent the previous night in nearby lodges.
